Description

Gymnema Sylvestre Powder is made from the dried leaves of the gymnema plant, an herb native to India and Africa with a long tradition of use in Ayurvedic practices. It has a naturally earthy, slightly bitter flavor and can be brewed into tea or blended into smoothies and herbal preparations.

Convenient and shelf-stable, this fine powder is a simple way to explore a traditional botanical ingredient. Its distinctive taste makes it a unique addition to both beverages and culinary recipes.

It is also thought to have detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties and be a natural appetite suppressant. Recently, research has shown that Gymnema Sylvestre may also be beneficial for helping to manage cholesterol levels, reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and treat digestive issues. Overall, Gymnema Sylvestre has a long history of use, and modern research is continuing to uncover more potential health benefits of this unique and powerful herb.

While this herb has been used for over 2000 years as a traditional part of ayurvedic medicine, it was in 1920 when preliminary studies began to find evidence of this herb’s medicinal action and how it may support the body’s ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Much of the research over the years has concluded that this herb affects two areas of physiology. The taste buds in the oral cavity first detect the sugar flavor and the small intestine’s porous surface.

The structure of the taste buds and the tissue that absorbs the sugar into the intestines are very similar. Most of these studies also strongly suggest that the herb’s ability to support healthy blood sugar levels is due to the active ingredient gymnemic acid (its structure is made up of triterpenoid, glucuronic acid, and several fatty acids).

These effects are believed to be due to the arrangement of molecules in this active ingredient, which are similar to those of a glucose molecule. The research shows that these molecules bind to receptor sites on the taste buds for 1-2 hours, preventing them from being activated by any sugar present in food. These glucose-like molecules may act the same in the intestines: filling the receptor locations in a case of mistaken identity. While Gymnema has been known to take away the sweet and bitter tastes, it has not affected other flavors like pungent and salty.

Many human studies have shown the potential for this powerful herb and its supportive qualities. One study took 22 people with type 2 insulin dependency who took oral insulin, and 400 mg of Gymnema Sylvestre extract daily.

The results were a significant reduction in blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, and plasma protein levels. This shows that this herb may support the body’s ability to release insulin. It was also concluded that Gymnema might work by possibly supporting the regeneration of b-cells. B cells are a type of white blood cell known as lymphocytes. This part of your adaptive immune system is involved in forming specific responses to certain antigens.

In another study, 27 people with type one insulin dependency were given 400 mg daily of Gymnema in extract form, and after 10-12 months, the results were quite positive. There was a reduction in fasting blood sugar levels, hemoglobin A1c, and plasma protein levels, reducing the requirement for insulin.

Finally, a study in 1986 suggested that consistent use of this herb may support healthy liver and pancreatic function. This shows Gymnema Sylvestre may have great potential for a variety of issues. Please keep in mind that when we use studies to show this herb’s effectiveness,  the studies are done with specific standardized or full-spectrum extracts.

Suggested Use: Take one teaspoon with meals or snacks. It will block any sweet taste, so some people prefer to take it after eating or drinking something that contains sugar or put the powder in a capsule.
